Real Estate Rally Skips Us
Sales are up in the Midwest, but median prices are down; the opposite is happening in Wichita's market.
Existing-home sales in the Midwest posted a healthy increase in September compared to a year ago, because the median home price continued to fall, making homes affordable for more buyers, the National Association of Realtors said Friday.

Home Sales Down; Market Steady
There were few surprises in the Wichita area's September housing numbers, as sales continued to fall but the market remained steady.
Sales fell 15.6 percent year over year in September, according to Wichita Area Multiple Listing Service numbers compiled by the Wichita Area Association of Realtors, from 957 in September 2007 to 808 last month.

Wichita Home Sales Down in September
September was another slow month in Wichita home sales, according to data released this week by the Wichita State University Center for Real Estate.
Total home sales were down 15.5 percent from September 2007. All told, 808 homes were sold in September compared to 957 from a year earlier. That number also was down from August’s 985.

Home improvement and repair and maintenance contractors often advertise in newspapers, the Yellow Pages, and on the radio and TV. However, don’t consider an ad an indication of the quality of a contractor’s work. Your best bet is a reality check from those in the know: friends, neighbors, or co-workers who have had improvement work done. Get written estimates from several firms. Ask for explanations for price variations. Don’t automatically choose the lowest bidder.

Wichita Housing Starts Down in June
New Wichita housing starts were down 32 percent year-over-year in June, according to the June TREM report, which was issued by First American Title this week.
The number of building permits issued in June in Derby, Maize and Haysville were up over last year. They were down in Andover and Valley Center.
